Health & Supplement Export FAQs

Common questions about exporting supplements to China.

Are supplements regulated as food or drugs in China?
It depends. Products making health claims are classified as health food (保健食品) and require SAMR registration. Products marketed as general food or dietary supplements have simpler requirements but cannot make health claims.
How long does health food registration take?
SAMR health food registration typically takes 18-24 months and requires extensive safety and efficacy documentation. The filing pathway for certain vitamin and mineral supplements is faster (6-12 months). We help you choose the right pathway.
Can I sell supplements as general food?
If your product does not make specific health claims, it can be classified as general food, requiring only GACC registration and standard food labeling. This is a common strategy for international supplement brands entering China.
What labeling is required for imported supplements?
Supplement labels must comply with GB 16740 (health food standards) or GB 7718 (general food standards). Labels must be in Chinese and include product name, ingredients, dosage instructions, warnings, and manufacturer information.
Are all supplement ingredients approved in China?
No. China maintains lists of approved health food ingredients and novel food ingredients. Some ingredients common in Western supplements may not be approved. We review your ingredient list and identify any issues.
Can I sell supplements through cross-border e-commerce?
Yes. Cross-border e-commerce allows supplements to be sold without SAMR registration, making it an attractive entry channel. However, products must still meet safety standards and comply with positive list requirements.
